Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today and is a threat to millions of girls and women online and offline. It affects women regardless of their age, background, or level of education. This violence takes many forms, including physical, sexual, or psychological violence, as well as economic abuse and exploitation.
25 November is the International Day to End Violence Against Women. It is also the launch of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence that will take place until 10 December, a campaign that is intended to generate attention and mobilise action to prevent gender-based violence (GBV). Recognising that gender inequality is a root cause of GBV, UNHCR – globally as well as within our region, together with the GtG and GBV AOR – also intends to use the campaign to advocate for the promotion of gender equality.
